I'm not too keen on shiny brass either. Or brass at all. But sometimes it's fitting and if it's nothing with (unremovable) wires it goes on the stove - in the fire - and then in some oliveoil. Makes them less shiny and gives them a nicer, more realistic colour and finish. It is such an economical way of getting good working lights in the rooms and by making them look just that little bit different you create a very personal look to your house. I do the same. I don't think I have a single mass produced light in my houses which I have not altered in one way or another. I have also read about using acetone to remove brass laquer and then ageing the raw brass.
